Project Description

The Undergrad Coop will work closely with a scientist that will guide him/her through the science involved in the purification of cultivation of cells and generation of proteins and as well as various analytical testing to prove that the purification cell cultivation and generated proteins has been successful with the process implemented.

The purpose of this project is to develop a cell culture monitoring technique using Raman Technology to enable real-time monitoring of metabolites generated within cell cultures of an existing process. The development of the technology and its implementation utilizes mammalian cell cultivation techniques such as bioreactors, spectroscopic and statistical analyses concepts.

The Undergrad-COOP will apply the skills learned at the university in the pharmaceutical industry and learn new ones from hands on experience of work assignment. Key skills include but are not limited to: communication, planning, organization, problem solving, team-working, data monitoring etc. This role will work and/or support real projects under supervision and guidance of highly skilled professionals that will help student to gain practical experience in the pharmaceutical field.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Execute cell culture maintenance of cells in flasks and bioreactors
Monitor cell culture for growth and cell health by using offline instruments such as cell counters, gas analyzers, & metabolite analyzers
Execute the on-line continuous monitoring of metabolites by using the Raman probe technology
Perform advanced statistical analyses to develop predictive models for each metabolite
Evaluation of historical data on protein purity
Support process transfer experiments following the detailed instructions in the SOPs
Participate in the development of the scope of work and plan implementation
Propose ideas on how to improve the design process
Interaction with multidisciplinary groups to assess the efficacy of the process and participate in data discussion
