  • Operation of 100-L scale fermentation systems, including planning, configuration, day-to-day operation, data analysis, and appropriate data recording.
  • Perform protocols and procedures, as written.
  • Recognize problem situations, troubleshoot, determine root cause using data, and take corrective action.
  • Develop expertise in both the process under development and the equipment being utilized.
  • Prepare documentation for communication of results.
  • Actively promote and participate in lab, department, and division safety initiatives.
  • High school diploma/GED with at least one of the following:
    • 7 years of relevant biotech, pharma manufacturing, pilot plant experience
    • Associates Degree in science/technology; plus 3 years of relevant biotech or pharma manufacturing or pilot plant experience.
  • Completion of Post Offer Exam, Completion of Work Simulation or Completion of Administrative Skills Testing if applicable.

  • Demonstrated an ability to excel in a team environment with potential to lead a small team on a day-to-day basis.
  • Candidates must be well organized, computer literate, possess and demonstrate high mechanical aptitude, high attention to details, and possess good interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with automated control systems and instrumentation.
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible in day-to-day operations and ability to respond quickly to changes.
  • Successfully demonstrated ability to troubleshoot both equipment and process issues.
  • Demonstrated self-management and ability to work independently.
  • Experience with basic statistical analyses (JMP, Excel).
  • Previous experience in independent operation and maintenance of bioreactors, fermentors and other ancillary equipment.
  • Experience with aseptic techniques/operation.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, self-management, task planning and organization.
  • Must be able to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Proven ability to manage a laboratory consumable inventory, scheduling of activities and work flow.
  • Lifting of up to 40 lbs is required for this position.
  • Experience with DCS systems (e.g., DeltaV, Foxboro) and data historians (e.g., OSI PI).
  • Demonstrated learning agility and interest to learn beyond immediate area of responsibilities.
  • Willingness to be flexible in day to day operations and support other pilot plant/laboratory processes as needed.
  • Experience working with a microscope.
  • Experience working with control valves, automatic valves, manual valves, piping, and instrumentation.
  • The fermentation pilot plant operates 7 days per week, but is covered with an 8 hour per day/5 days per week schedule. To cover the weekends, technicians are required to share coverage of sampling on the weekends through mandatory weekend overtime.
  • Must carry a cell phone pager and laptop computer and be willing to respond to process/utility alarms on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical requirements include lifting of materials up to 40 lbs,, ability to climb stairs or ladders, and stand for long periods of time.
  • This position involves working with potential allergens, including agricultural raw materials (fish meal, soybean flour, cottonseed flour, etc.) and microorganisms (Streptomyces, E. coli) as well as several natural products, notably Tylosin.
  • Environmental conditions include high noise and temperature.
  • Travel would be less than 10%.
