Responsibilities The Site Program Veterinarian/Local Animal Welfare Officer serves the Ft. Dodge site by providing health care to animals in the Research and Development and Manufacturing and Quality departments. In addition, the position will ensure local compliance with animal welfare and regulatory guidelines serving as the Local Animal Welfare Officer (LAWO). This role will support the larger global Animal Welfare organization, specifically with policy, programmatic development and accreditation activities.Functions, Duties, Tasks:Support herd/colony health monitoring, including emergency treatments, animal evaluations at arrival, and appropriate disposition activities.Provide hands-on execution of basic and advance clinical techniques.Train basic and advanced clinical and husbandry procedures to all study execution associates.Provide leadership and guidance to associates conducting animal care activities.Maintain current knowledge of relevant veterinary procedures and trends by participating in, and/or with professional organizations, continuing education, external collaborators, and interacting with leading scientists and authorities to support R&D clinical activities and M&Q product release activities.Support the design and development of the site husbandry and clinical program through document management.Work with the R&D and M&Q scheduling team to coordinate weekly clinical, operational, and husbandry tasks for veterinary involvement and guidance.Serve as the Local Animal Welfare Officer (LAWO), functioning as the subject matter expert to the site in this realm.Serve as the third party AW accreditation subject matter expert to the global AW program.Consult and provide support and expertise on clinical, operational, and AW components on study protocol development for clinical trials.Rotate with other staff veterinarians in the IACUC Attending Veterinarian committee role.As the LAWO, work with site management to ensure all enterprise AW programming is properly implemented at the site: animal vendor contracts, adoption, incident reporting, screening of animal care staff at hire, animal rights extremism risk mitigation/action planning, media management related to animals, regular AW training for site staff, controlled drug compliance, etc.Develop AW training modules for global AW program, in close alignment with operations unitsServe as a subject matter expert (SME) and animal welfare representative regarding animal management on the site SOP committee and aid in the development of program needed SOPs.Initiate and execute a program for routine veterinary/animal management walk through of animal areas and animal receipt inspections.Provide regular AW updates and participate in site leadership team activities.Perform as lead on global AW internal inspections, as assigned.Active participation in new animal facility design and implementation efforts, to include renovations.Completion of third party contract research organization and animal vendor audits, as assigned. Target: 4 audits per year.Participation and leadership in global AW projects to include AAALAC accreditation efforts, policy and procedure development, and training module generation. 32819BR Basic Qualifications DVM degree with current license to practice in the United States.3 years working in an Animal Welfare-regulated environment.3 years working in the Animal Health industry with pre-clinical and clinical model.Experience with third party Animal Welfare (AW) accreditation process for an animal research facilityQualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States.
