 Job Summary:

We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to conceptualize, design, develop, test, and verify system solutions used in medical and industrial imaging systems. As a Sr. Systems engineer you will provide support to product development engineering with a system approach to design, which includes tradeoff studies, requirements definition, and system decomposition.

The Senior Systems Engineer position is a critical role responsible for system level product designs. As a system engineer, you will work closely together with product management, project management, development engineers and production in order to design a product that fulfills customer, manufacturing, service, market and regulatory requirements.  You will be responsible for system requirements and system architecture, reviews of sub-system requirements and architectures, review of design verification plans, and leading system integration efforts throughout the development life cycle.


  • As a Senior Systems Engineer you will be responsible to

    • Derive and maintain ownership of top level system (product) requirements by collaborating with stake holder representatives- Program Management, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Quality Assurance- to understand User Needs

    • Develop and maintain ownership of system architecture documentation

    • Ensure that all authors of separate design specifications have articulated the specifications in enough detail to design a system that meets all defined and approved product requirements

    • Perform the necessary tradeoffs (reliability, cost, schedule, manufacturability, etc.) of various design approaches and select an optimal approach

    • Make sure that all components are working seamlessly together as one system

    • Decompose the system (product) requirements into hardware, software, optical, and mechanical design allocations

    • Participate in the system risk analysis

    • Define insulation diagram

    • Participate in creation of technical system documentation

    • Review the detailed hardware, software, optical, and mechanical design to ensure it meets the objective and requirements identified in the system documents.

    • Develop and execute plan for integration and test of product components comprising the system

    • Review system verification plan, procedures, and results

    • Work with Compliance Engineer to coordinate external system testing with notified body, e.g. TüV, UL, etc.

    • Ensure traceability between system requirements and user needs. Responsible for overall system performance

    • Manage system configurations (configuration management)

    • Collaborate with Karl Storz departments globally

  • Regular Domestic Travel (1 week per quarter)

  • Sustaining Support

    • Provide sustaining support for existing product lines.This may include analysis of field issues and/or analysis of manufacturing issues. Recommend, where appropriate, design system changes.

    • Analysis and documentation of system changes.

  • Regular attendance is an essential job function.

  • You will spend part of your time as a member of continuous improvement teams undertaking projects and seeking ways to improve the quality of products and services.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field with at least 7 years or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field with at least 5 years of experience in analog/digital system design and analysis

  • Design and familiarity with FPGAs a plus

  • Familiarity with Endoscopy and medical equipment design a plus

  • Ability to perform system tradeoff studies.

  • Experience with and competent knowledge of NTSC/PAL video systems a plus

  • Knowledgeable of image processing techniques

  • Understanding of software design, software design process, and RTOS.

  • Understanding of analog and digital hardware design.

  • Basic understanding of optical design, optical materials, and coatings

  • Basic understanding of mechanical issues including adhesives, sealing techniques and sterilization requirements

  • Knowledgeable of mechanical and opto/mechanical systems.

  • Familiarity with standard drawing requirements
