At Merck’s Manufacturing Facility in Elkton, Virginia we currently have a Senior Specialist, Automation position available. This role manages the team of automation engineers responsible for all aspects of process / facility automation in a new biologics / vaccine manufacturing facility.

Additional responsibilities will include:

•Participating in design / engineering reviews
•Maintaining systems and solutions in accordance with cGMP and GAMP standards as well as in accordance with company policies and procedures and regulatory agency expectations.
•Conducting investigations and performing trouble-shooting of systems to maintain and improve manufacturing performance.
•Mentor and train end-users and technical and operations staff
•Providing off-hour troubleshooting and support by phone and in person when required
•Participate in process / facility equipment Factory Acceptance Testing as required
•Writing and reviewing technical documents
•Participation in compliance audits
•Identifying and implementing system improvements using the change control process

The successful candidate will have examples of:

•Excellent communication and team skills – position will require significant interaction with many customers and partners both on and off the plant site.
•Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be proactive – position requires self-directed learning, going onto the shop floor to interact with customers and partners to learn their manufacturing information system data needs, and identify ways to improve service and performance.
•Demonstrated technical problem-solving skill, including the ability to think creatively, logically, and systematically.
•Drive to succeed and to help others do the same.


Required Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science with 6 or more years relevant work experience
•Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science with 4 or more years of relevant work experience
•Experience with Emerson DeltaV or similar process control system

Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience in an operations/manufacturing environment preferred.
•Validation and SDLC experience with computer systems.
•Experience working with regulatory requirements (i.e. cGMP, OSHA)
•Experience working under cGMPs
•Allen Bradley PLC, GE Unicorn experience
•Experience with GAMP
