At Merck’s Manufacturing Facility in Elkton, Virginia we currently have a Senior Specialist position available. This role manages the team of engineers and scientists responsible for the downstream (purification) unit operations in a new biologics / vaccine manufacturing facility.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

•Assist in the design, construction and start-up of a new state-of-the-art biologics / vaccine manufacturing facility
•Provide technical coverage for downstream unit operations in large-molecule / biologics manufacturing
•Employ strong verbal and written communication skills
•Manage, coach and develop team members
•Develop and manage continuous improvement projects
•Lead investigations and audits
•Prepare and manage budgets
•Write and review technical documents
•Maintain excellence of compliance with safety, environmental and GMP regulations

Qualifications

Educational requirements:

•B.S. degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biological systems engineering, biology, biochemistry, chemistry or related science or engineering discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

•Industrial experience in pharmaceutical (biologics/vaccines/sterile) manufacturing, in a GMP compliant setting
•Experience leading and performing technical investigations
•Significant experience / expertise in at least 2 of the following unit operations:
◦Process Chromatography
◦Tangential Flow Filtration
◦Centrifugation
◦Depth / Dead-end Filtration

Preferred Experience and Skills:

•Experience working with commercial scale microbial fermentation and protein isolation unit operations
•Single-use equipment experience
•Commissioning / qualification experience
•Aseptic processing and sterile manufacturing experience
•Experience with process validation, cleaning validation, and regulatory filing activities
•Experience working with DeltaV
•Experience working with Unicorn
•Experience working with SAP
