Project Description

The Upstream Process Scientist  will be involved in  early stage process development and late stage process optimization, transfer and clinical/commercial manufacturing support for cell culture  processes producing protein therapeutics.  

The successful candidate will also help defining and implementing  the strategic directions of the Upstream Process Sciences group. Furthermore he/she will  establish  key technology platforms that will ensure continuous improvement in clinical and commercial manufacturing operations. 

Major accountabilities    
  • Perform cell culture  experiments for the development of new manufacturing processes and the improvement of existing processes at lab and pilot scale, including all upstream and harvest activities as well as associated analytical methods 
  • Provide technical expertise in upstream processing for internal customers (e.g.  New Meds, Downstream Process Development, Analytical Sciences, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Contract manufacturing Management) 
  • Provide robust cell culture processing support to manufacturing, facility and equipment design, technology transfer 
  • Help determine process limits as part of process understanding, characterization and validation studies 
  • Trend and analyze laboratory data and present results to line manager, USP team and at internal meetings 
  • Provide traceable records of lab work, experimental design and report writing in English language (e.g. batch records, lab notebooks, protocols, reports, thesis, publications) 
  • Contribute to the development of new technologies within the USP team and where possible contribute to the development of intellectual property 
  • Promote good collaboration with our teams by providing updates of work and project progress to technical teams and project meetings as required 
  • Managing placement students and/or associate scientists (depending on experience) 
  • Aid with reviewing, writing and updating internal procedures and documents (e.g. Lab procedures, SOPs, templates) 
  • Contribute to the maintenance  of a safe laboratory working environment, including contribution to writing and reviewing HSE risk assessments related to USP activities
Experience and skills    
  • Education: Master Degree or PhD in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology or bioengineering with 3-5 years’ experience in process development/manufacturing sciences 
  • Very good English skills, written and spoken, good level of French is a major asset 
  • Demonstrated skill in mammalian/microbial fermentation cell culture and aseptic techniques 
  • Experienced in the operation and analysis of various bioreactor/fermenter systems (rocking mode, stirred glass, stirred stainless steel) at various scales 
  • Strong laboratory skills and a track record of spending >50% of current and past work function in the laboratory 
  • Experience with cGMP and large-scale manufacturing equipment and practices and/or experience  with technology transfer to cGMP facilities would be beneficial 
  • Experience in process intensification, high throughput technologies for cell culture, statistics, bio-analytics, media development and/or digitalization would be beneficial 
  • Ability to learn and use appropriate data management concepts and tools 
  • Ability to author and approve comprehensive and accurate SOPs and protocols/reports 
  • Ability to work matrix and virtual team across geographies and time-zones 
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with internal customers/partners 
  • Experience in effectively managing placement students and/or associate scientists is required, as is effective communication, oral and written, in a multi-disciplinary, project-driven work environment would be beneficial 
  • Ability to  structure, process and communicate large amounts of data 
  • Flexible and able to produce results under tight deadlines
