Here, everyone matters and you will be a vital contributor to our inspiring, bold mission.  As a Senior Corporate Counsel working on the Intellectual Property team, you will be empowered to Drive Intellectual Property Strategies around Drug Discovery and Drug Development.  


The overall purpose for this senior level in-house counsel position is to provide intellectual property (IP) services for the organization in a variety of areas relevant to the pharmaceutical industry and to contribute to the development of IP strategies for the organization. The position also involves performing a range of other IP-related legal services for the organization, including counseling, review of policies and procedures, and evaluation of legal agreements.


This is a senior level attorney position where the individual performs his or her primary work responsibilities largely independently, requiring limited supervision by more senior attorneys in the organization. The attorney is able to support a range of intellectual property activities in the following areas:

  • Preparing and prosecuting patent applications arising from Takeda’s research and development activities
  • Building and maintaining IP strategies for compounds in Takeda’s development and commercialization pipeline including
    • conducting patentability and freedom to operate assessments for Takeda inventions and research activities
    • preparing and prosecuting patent applications worldwide covering Takeda inventions
    • coordinating with and communicating relevant information to Takeda’s development organizations
  • Supporting global Takeda business development activities by
    • conducting due diligence, legal review, contract drafting and support for Takeda’s investment, partnering and in-licensing activities
    • participating in contract negotiations with outside parties on behalf of Takeda
    • analyzing and managing agreements and IP issues involving Takeda’s contracts with third parties
    • supporting administration of such contracts
  • Participating in globalization and harmonization of Takeda’s intellectual property departments, including serving in working groups and on project teams
  • Managing outside counsel
  • Serving as a resource for the training of more junior attorneys

Education and Experience:
  • An undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry or related field
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree
  • Ten-plus years of experience actively practicing patent law
  • A graduate degree in biology, chemistry or related field
  • Experience as in-house counsel for a life science company
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience drafting and prosecuting pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical patent applications worldwide
  • Able to identify and to evaluate freedom-to-operate risks for new molecular entities and enabling technologies
  • Able to work independently on new assignments and to supervise activities of support staff
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Able to influence and work successfully with varied audiences
  • Able to lead selected intellectual property projects on behalf of Takeda
  • Self-starter with team-building skills
  • Registered to practice law in at least one state
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Ability to drive or fly to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips; some international travel is required
  • Requires approximately 10% travel
