Project Description

ProjectRemembering the City of Life. The Literary memory ofthe Occupation of FiumeIn September 1919 a group of volunteers headed by the Italian poet Gabriele D Annunzio occupied the town of Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) to claim its annexation to Italy. During the occupation, which lasted till December 1920, Fiume became a unique political and artistic labyrinth, attracting all sorts of political activists as well as many Italian and foreign avant-garde artists. Extensive scholarly attention has been devoted to the political-historical significance of Fiume and to the role of D Annunzio s aestheticism in the occupation, yet surprisingly little research has been carried to the large body of literary writings dedicated to the occupation. This project analyzes the literary representations of the Fiume occupation from 1919 till the present day, and relates the literary dimension of accounts on Fiume to broader transformations of the cultural and political memory of Fiume. By an in-depth analysis of a selected corpus of 50 items across different genres and periods (from the years of the occupation till the 21st century), the project aims to raise greater awareness of the historical significance of the occupation of Fiume.ProfileCandidates hold an MA in literary studies (major in Italian) or Italian studies (major in literature), have a near-native competency in Italian and a high level of proficiency in English. We expect candidates to have strong research interests in literature of the Modernist period, and in particular in the relationship between literature and politics, the European avant-garde. The candidate will be appointed as a junior Ph.D. researcher (doctoraatsbursaal) for a period of 2+2years, during which s/he will present the results of the research in conference papers, journal articles and book chapters. The final objective of the researchproject is a Ph.D. dissertation. The candidate is expected to be on campus for at least three or four working days a week, to participate in the collective activities of MDRN. The candidate is expected to assist in the organization of workshops and/or conferences related to the topic of the project, and may be asked to contribute occasionally to teaching.OfferMDRN offers an exciting research environment allowing young scholars to pursue their individual research goals in an independent way, but offering them at the same time the benefits of a strong tradition in collaborative research.
