Introduction of the hiring department
Our goal is to be the best in class medicinal chemistry organization to discover mainly innovative small molecule drugs for the patients. We can make an impact on patients' lives suffering from CNS and other diseases by our strength of chemistry. Shall we create new medicines with unconventional thinking?


The medicinal chemist proposes and conducts medicinal chemistry to advance drug discovery research in Central Nervous System (CNS) Drug Discovery Unit. And develops compound design and creates synthesis route to ensure timely completion of generation of drug candidates by using cutting edge chemistry.



・Independently designs and synthesizes small-molecules and other modalities for drug discovery projects in order to advance those programs into clinical development.
     - Designs synthetic targets for lead discovery and optimization to address issues of target potency, selectivity, animal pharmacokinetics, toxicity, physical property and in vivo efficacy with diversified modalities (mainly small molecule).
     - Utilizes contemporary structure-based methods, structure-activity relationships, and medicinal chemistry principles in the proposal and execution of innovative chemistry strategies.
     - Conducts the synthesis of complex target molecules safely.
     - Designs viable synthetic routes and performs literature searches in support of research.
・Collaborate closely with a broad group of scientists within Takeda, and/or with external collaborators and outside service providers as a member of project team.
・Creates relevant intellectual property for the company and contributes to patent authorship.
・Reports to one's supervisor and shares information with one's colleagues about progress and issues in a timely manner.
・Contributes to the authorship of scientific manuscripts, frequently as principal author.
・Maintains a current understanding of the synthetic literature and methodology, as well as the scientific literature related to a specific drug discovery project.
・May mentor Research Scientists.
・Represents own research to senior leadership, or for scientific collaborations, or a national scientific conference.
・Fosters a bottom up culture of science level.
・Address safety and health control / code of conduct / compliance.


Makes strategies for research programs in therapeutic areas relevant to stakeholders.

Maintains a current understanding of the scientific fields especially in chemistry / medicinal chemistry / modality (e.g. competitive situation, new technology, and new research portfolio) and be well informed about current regulatory (FDA etc.) requirements and trends.

Supports projects by supplying competitive landscape, alliance, collaborative opportunities, and novel technologies.

May develop new platform technology through internal/external collaborations.

Education, Expertise and Skills etc.


Ph.D. in chemistry/medicinal chemistry with a minimum 3 year of pharmaceutical industry experience, OR

MS in chemistry/medicinal chemistry with a minimum 5 year of pharmaceutical industry experience.


Strong track record of scientific contributions (such as publication, preclinical candidate selection) in the field of medicinal chemistry.

Demonstrates fundamental understanding of drug discovery within one or more therapeutic areas.

Obtains general knowledge of drug discovery process from target identification through preclinical research.

Demonstrates inter-disciplinary knowledge of drug discovery (e.g., enzymology, cellular pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics) and is able to use this knowledge to influence project strategy.

Ability to put the medicinal chemistry efforts into new directions to achieve project milestones.

Vigorous scientific curiosity evidenced by contributions to diverse medicinal chemistry strategies.

Ability to present work formally to Research Committee and at external conferences.


・Excellent communication and multitasking skills and ability to work in a team setting.

・Proven leadership capability in cross-functional team setting with the excellent mastery of the compound's design. 

・Obtains good business skills and manners such as logical thinking/strategic planning/self-management, etc.

・Manual dexterity required to operate office equipment (computers, phones, etc.)


・Has demonstrated ability to manage productive/diverse team(s), and has strong leadership/commitment.

・Contributes to create an open atmosphere from diversified perspectives and challenges the status quo without hesitation

・Has willingness to work in a dynamic and changing environment

・Addresses safety and health control / code of conduct / compliance

・No allergies against any organic reagents and any solvents.

・Has a good command of financial aspects of projects.

・Possesses knowledge of computer chemistry/ peptide drug discovery/ nucleic acid drug discovery in addition to small molecule drug discovery.


・English: Business level (good writing, reading and speaking skill)

・Japanese: Daily communication skill is plus
