The successful candidate will playan important role in a multidisciplinary department whose objective is to fullycharacterize the toxicity of drug candidates and to determine the relevance ofthese findings for human clinical studies. The responsibilities of theposition include performing clinical ophthalmic examinations, interpretingdata, preparing study reports, and serving as a resource within the company forophthalmic issues. In addition, research opportunities includecollaborative participation in the drug discovery/development process invarious therapeutic areas and serving as a study director. Outstandingwritten and verbal communication skills are essential.The position is located at MerckResearch Laboratories, Department of Safety Assessment, West Point, PA.QualificationsEducation Requirements:- DVM and/or PhD or equivalent, with experience intoxicology, pathology, laboratory animal medicine or in a relatedscientific discipline (e.g., pharmacology, physiology).Required:- Preclinical ophthalmic examination experiencePreferred:- Preclinical ophthalmic examination experience in mice,rats, dogs, rabbits, and monkeys- Experience with indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lampbiomicroscopy, and direct ophthalmoscopy- Interpretation of preclinical ophthalmic examinationdata; and scientific report writing skills- Ophthalmic photography experience (slit lamp and funduscamera in a variety of species)- Experience with other ophthalmic examinationprocedures/modalities, such as intra-ocular pressure measurements,fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography- Experience in general pharmaceutical drug development- Ophthalmic drug development experienceOur employees are the key to our company s success.
