This doctorate is within a collaboration with a big chemical company in an excellent network with some of the best groups in the world for zeolite preparation, catalysis and characterization. This gives an ideal environment for doing good research! Although it is an industry-related project, there is great interest in fundamental understanding of the reaction and the catalyst. There is a large interest in also publishing the results, thus it is an ideal start into a career in either academia or industry.
More specifically, this doctorate will cover various aspects of zeolite chemistry and characterization. Catalysts are prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and either these catalysts or commercial ones are then treated (dealumination, ion exchange…) to form the active catalyst. These catalysts are then employed in different, industrially relevant reactions. These can either be metal-(ion) catalysed or acid catalysed. Characterization is performed on the catalyst to elucidate structure-activity relationships. Some examples are XRD, FTIR with probes to identify acid strength or SEM for investigating the morphology of the catalysts.
The successfulcandidate will complete his PhD within the Arenberg doctoral school and almostentirely research driven. 6 ECTS of courses have to be completed and studentsupervision in close relation to your research is a small part of the PhD. APhD generally takes 4 years to finish and can start as soon as possible.
We are looking for aperson with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, (bio)chemical engineering orrelated disciplines with excellent study results and a strong background incatalysis. A strong academic record, such as having prior research stays abroador other research experiences, is a plus. It is also of great interest, if thecandidate has further, complimentary skills, such as in advancedcharacterization techniques.
