Project Description

  • High-resolution X-ray tomography (µCT) is an increasingly popular tool for the non-destructive internal and external visualization of the morphology of objects, materials and structures in 3D with high detail. 
  • To obtain chemical information about the sample, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) can be used.
  •  The combination of both techniques is a very powerful tool, which allows for a full characterization of a sample. 
  • At our  University, the Radiation Physics research group, part of the Center for X-ray Tomography UGCT, and the X-ray Microspectroscopy and Imaging research group have jointly built a unique combined µCT-XRF system, which is now fully operational. 
  • To fully exploit the potential of these combined methodologies, this project will explore the possibility of using feedback between the two modalities, i.e. to use the information obtained in one modality to improve the reconstruction quality of the other modality and vice versa.
  •  Furthermore, results obtained by the combined techniques will be compared with those from hyperspectral X-ray imaging, a novel imaging modality relying on a new type of X-ray detector which is being developed at several institutes at the moment and of which two different types are available in the Radiation Physics group. 
  • The research activities will involve performing experiments, performing Monte-Carlo simulations and developing novel bi-modal reconstruction methodologies.

Profile of the Candidate 
  • We are looking for an independent and well-organized working scientist, demanding high quality of own work, with well-developed social skills directed towards working in an interdisciplinary team, excellent interpersonal and communicative skills, a strong motivation to succeed in scientific research, excellent presentation and scientific writing skills, good to excellent English language skills (verbally and written). 
  • Experience with X-ray tomography, detector technology and/or Monte Carlo simulation is an asset. 
  • Applicants should elaborate their interest and possible experience in X-ray imaging, instrumentation and experimentation in their letter of motivation. 
  • You will work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists in a state-of-the-art X-ray imaging facility where pioneering work on laboratory-based µCT and hyperspectral X-ray imaging is performed, and in close collaboration with a team of scientists specialized in high-resolution X-ray fluorescence imaging.
