Primarily responsible for assisting in the performance of assigned General Toxicology studies in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice Regulations and Standard Operating Procedures. Training will be conducted while learning basic technical functions under the direction of supervision/management and more experienced personnel. May be assigned to perform a specific in-house project to occur during the internship, with a presentation of this project prior to the end of the internship. Computer skills learned include the basic general WTDMS™ applications. Other duties would include husbandry and observation of live animals on a daily basis, maintenance and review of data and maintaining the stock colony animals. Other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Weighing animals and food (stock animal colonies)
•Animal observations (quarantine animals and stock animal colonies)
•Receiving animals (Rats, Rabbits, Mice, Dogs, Pigs)
•Identification of animals via ear tag or tattoo (tail tattoos- newborn/adult rodents)
•Animal restraint for dosing/phlebotomy procedures
•Euthanasia of animals as needed (CO2 inhalation/ sodium pentobarbital or isoflurane inhalation)
•Animal care responsibilities for animals in quarantine and stock colonies
•Feeding and watering of animals
•Animal placement following study randomization
•Animal change-out into clean caging (litter banks and stainless steel caging)
•Thorough review of data on a daily basis (own work as well as others)
•Ordering/receiving/stocking general supplies
•Generation of data tables
•Maintain neat and orderly records for stock colonies
•Collecting vaginal lavages for the determination of estrous stage or evidence of mating
•Operation of essential WTDMS™ programs for data collectionQualifications
Key skills include experience working with live animals, a basic understanding of scientific procedures and interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to interact with multiple personality types and cultural backgrounds.
•Minimum of a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
•Previous Animal Experience in FFA, Farming, 4-H, etc. preferred
•Minimum of 1 year post-secondary education or related
