The Associate Director Market Research leads a team that provides the full range of market research services in support of a business unit and its brands.  The Associate Director is a strategic advisor to the business they support, with an expertise in marketing research and analytical techniques.  The incumbent works with Brand teams to understand business strategies, issues and needs, and develops market research strategies to deliver insights and recommendations to support strategic and tactical decision-making. 

 

The Associate Director typically oversees other market research staff managing market research projects.  The incumbent also initiates, develops, and manages individual market research projects.  The incumbent will manage projects in such a way that study objectives meet client needs and the output is delivered on time and within budget, and approved company policies are followed.

 

The incumbent is required to manage their work, time, and resources in support of company strategies, anticipate information requirements from senior management, think creatively to solve complex business issues, and communicate effectively on complicated concepts.  The incumbent will work within the assigned business unit / brand team with a service orientation while maintaining independence and objectivity.  To support long term business needs, the incumbent needs to identify gaps and develop UCB capabilities (people, process, tools, skills) to fill them.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Develop annual market research plans based on business strategies, recommend annual budgets, and manage expenses within approved budgets.  Develop action plans and service level agreements with internal customers, mobilize resources in order to meet business needs and balance workload.

 

Assist the commercial organization in assessing and setting priorities by analyzing consequences of choices, creating business cases to support the strategy and establishing the metrics to measure the impact.

May provide leadership and direction to a team of one to three staff (Analysts, Senior Analysts, Managers, and Senior Managers). Set clear expectations, clarify team’s roles and responsibilities, and create a work environment that promotes accountability, delivery of results, flexibility, trust, creativity, inquisitiveness, career development, and continuous improvement.

 

Serve as an internal expert on market dynamics for assigned therapeutic areas across multiple brands and/or TA’s by monitoring and analyzing the therapeutic environments through integrated primary and secondary market research techniques.

 

Anticipate future changes in the market and identify competitive threats and opportunities.  Understand potential impact of any shifts in attitudes and/or behaviors of key customers. Present plan of action, via market research techniques, to further investigate issues and provide actionable recommendations to internal teams.

 

Oversee and deliver US market assessments as directed by the Director Market Research within assigned therapeutic areas in support of pipeline product development, in-line product management, and business development initiatives.  Provide objective analysis on current and future market values and expected changes in the competitive landscape. 

 

Seek out, assess, and recommend innovative market research methodologies, information sources, and vendors.  Maintain and up-to-date knowledge of Pharmaceutical Industry trends and issues, especially with regards to capabilities, tools, and techniques that are relevant to functional / technical responsibilities

 

Manage vendor relationships and negotiate cross-functional data (trade, managed care, sales, sales operations, marketing) and service contracts to assure that purchased resources are being used to maximize sales and brand team strategic value.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience with Marketing Research, Business Intelligence and/or equivalent in pharmaceutical company.
  • Previous management experience with over sight of direct reports is required
  • Experience with a broad range of primary and secondary research methods is required (qualitative, quantitative, primary and secondary, etc)
  • Experience working closely with other functional teams is preferred
  • Software: MS Office - Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills. Proficiency with statistical packages (SAS, SPSS, etc.) is a differentiator.
  • Data: Knowledge of key pharmaceutical industry data sources (e.g. IMS) is required.  Includes an understanding of how data is collected, accessed, and used to drive analysis. Experience with longitudinal patient data, managed care formulary data and non-retail data is required and should be reasonably well developed coming into the job.  Experience in common statistical analyses is a plus.
