At Merck’s Manufacturing Facility in Elkton, Virginia, we currently have an Associate Director position available. This role manages the team of engineers and scientists responsible for media / buffer preparation and upstream unit operations in a new biologics / vaccine manufacturing facility.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

•Assist in the design, construction and start-up of a new state-of-the-art biologics / vaccine manufacturing facility
•Provide technical coverage for upstream and media / buffer operations in Biologics manufacturing
•Employ strong verbal and written communication skills
•Manage, coach and develop team members
•Develop and manage continuous improvement projects
•Lead investigations and audits
•Prepare and manage budgets
•Write and review technical documents
•Maintain excellence of compliance with safety, environmental and GMP regulations


Required Education:

•PhD in Biological Based Science or Engineering Field and a minimum of 2 years’ experience managing scientists and engineers in an industrial setting
•Bachelor’s degree in Biological Based Science or Engineering Field and a minimum of 6 years’ experience managing scientists and engineers in an industrial setting

Required Experience and Skills:

•Industrial experience in pharmaceutical (biologics/vaccines/sterile) manufacturing, in a GMP compliant setting
•Expertise in microbial fermentation
•Experience leading and performing technical investigations
•Experience leading / managing direct reports

Preferred Experience and Skills:

•Experience working with commercial scale microbial fermentation and protein isolation unit operations
•Single-use equipment experience
•Commissioning / qualification experience
•Aseptic processing and sterile manufacturing experience
•Experience with process validation, cleaning validation, and regulatory filing activities
•Experience working with DeltaV
•Experience working with SAP
