In 1992, Eli Lilly and Company established the Delivery Device business for the purpose of creating, developing, launching and continuously improving proprietary delivery device systems. We are seeking highly motivated materials engineering professionals to join our Materials Engineering and Test Methods team in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Materials Engineering and Test Methods team is an “end-to-end” function within Lilly. This role will explore and develop polymer processing and mold-flow analysis techniques as well as apply these technologies towards creating components for new and emerging medical devices for patients. The scope of this role will include current and new products. The ideal individual will be able to take initiative and work independently and drive device component development from a fundamental polymer engineering perspective. In addition, they will need to be an effective collaborator with many different interdisciplinary partners:

Technical colleagues in the broader Lilly Technical Center (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Lilly Innovation Center (Cambridge, Massachusetts)

Product Development & Commercialization Support:
Provide recommendations on material selection & processing technologies and create molding control strategies based on rigorous engineering analysis of molding/modeling data and physical testing results
Lead the development of advanced plastics processing and mold-flow analysis strategy for the organization. Create a network of internal and external process technology and simulation capabilities to support this strategy.
Be deeply involved with prototype manufacture, process engineering and design for manufacturability activities of the organization
Understand physical and chemical properties of key materials and determine interaction with other device mechanical/system level components and how they behave in the manufacturing, storage, handling and patient use environments
Support commercialization projects and the continuous improvement of currently marketed products by owning materials science & engineering deliverables
Drive and facilitate root-cause analysis of materials-related issues with product performance or manufacturing challenges
Work with tooling and molding engineers on resin development and process technologies
Author and manage technical reports; Generate novel and applicable IP
Maintain expertise through continuous learning/refresh of new materials and novel process technologies
Compliance & Documentation:
Ensure that the work activities are conducted in accordance with applicable medical device regulations
Follow cGMPs and ensure documentation is developed that supports decisions and changes
Team work / Leadership / Communication:
Maintain frequent contact with the internal and external stakeholders. Provide regular project updates and keep stakeholders informed of key items
Communicate technical expertise and learnings to process and project teams and at external venues
Understand IP, freedom to operate and competitive landscape in targeted areas
Ph.D. in Polymer/Materials Engineering
Minimum 10 years of experience in a materials engineering role with an emphasis on hands on injection molding and advanced mold-flow analysis expertise
Understanding of injection molding and advanced mold-flow analyses – peer recognized subject matter expertise in both fields is highly desired
Experience with multi-shot molding, insert/over molding, elastomer injection molding, molding of thin-walled articles and/or parts with complex geometries
Work experience in a regulated environment (e.g., pharmaceuticals, medical devices, automotive, aerospace, food); prior Medical Device experience is highly preferred
Intimate understanding of the relationship between: plastics, plastics transformation processes (extrusion/injection molding), and material structure-property relationships
Project Management skills – demonstrated ability to work across boundaries (with equipment suppliers, contract manufacturing sites, parts suppliers, development teams, etc.)
Experience leading cross functional design and development project teams (combination products, consumer medical devices, consumer electronic devices, automotive, or aeronautical preferred)
Experience in product design / development / commercialization
Demonstrated high degree of ownership / accountability with ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
Excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent technical writing and presentation skills
Location: Indianapolis, IN.
