Managing a small research team to strive for excellence. Development of a pre-clinical antibody directed against PlGF using in vitro and in vivo methodologies. Establishment of in vivo read outs in the ophthalmic area (ie models for DR/DME, PVD, Uveitis, ...) resulting in efficacy and safety data for evaluation of new drug candidates. Presenting non-clinical data to the FDA AdCom Specialties: Project planning, development and implementation of ophthalmology animal models

Current Experience

  • Labdirector
    Since November 2012
Responsible for operations of an in vivo research facility focused on oncological and ophthalmological research. Tasks range from facility design and construction follow up, approval and execution of experiments to managing legal and government interactions

  • Team Leader Ophthalmology
    Since May 2010
Running the daily management of an ophthalmology research unit, from innovative experimental design through to resource allocation for fast and efficient execution. Main project: ocriplasmin, a novel protease for the treatment of vitreomacular adhesion Submission of non-clinical research data to EMA and FDA with intent obtain market authorisation for new drugs. Focus projects: current R&D pipeline content Development of ophthalmology related animal models and generation of POC data to support futher investment in pipeline compounds

Past Experience

  • Ph.D. Student
    March 2006 --- May 2010
Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences: development of anti-PlGF antibodies for use in cancer Vesalius Institute, promoter: Prof. Peter Carmeliet

  • Scientist
    January 2004 --- January 2006
Development of biomolecular methods to detect and quantify Heterodera schachtii, a harmful sugar beet parasite, in soil samples

  • Scientist programmer
    January 2003 --- January 2004
Development of applications to stimulate students (14-18 year olds) in learning the exact sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics)
