Summary

Post-doc Exploring deeper in immunology as a post-doc at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. Investigating a plethora of cytokines classified under the Th17 subset of T cells and their effects on airway disorders. The project focuses on the cross reactivity of Th17 cytokines and their resulting responses to pathogens and environmental agents. Tipping off the immune scale as a result of natural courses, microbial colonization or environmental agents may lead to lung disorders like severe asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or acute respiratory distress syndrome like bronchiolitis, chronic lung allograft rejection and cystic fibrosis. What is the immunology behind all these? MSc, PhD As a young student mesmerized by the confusion surrounding HIV research, I had a basic thought, Why not put a great deal of resources in understanding the immune evasive mechanisms utilized by HIV?. As a PhD student and post doc working with a formidable immunologist professor Marie Larsson we used state-of-the-ark sophisticated tools, to conspicuously show that HIV evades immune attack by inducing expression of a broad array of inhibitory molecules on T cells. As a result of this, HIV is able to enjoy immune tolerance giving it the leverage to wage the assaults we see in patients. Most importantly, a deeper exploration revealed that the induction of these inhibitory molecules was guided by two transcription pathways working in tandem, P38MAPK and STAT3. Outstandingly, the interruption of the traffic through this pathway resulted in a more viable and potent T cell response. Four years of professional training as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Professional experience in hospitals, working closely with HIV infected individuals, performing clinical diagnosis of diseases in the fields of Bacteriology, Haematology/Serology, Virology, Mycology, Clinical Chemistry, and Parasitology). Specialties: Researcher Biomedical Scientist

Experiences

Current Experience

  • Post Doctoral Research Fellow
    Since October 2012
Exploring other angles of immunology presently, I now have on board studies of the outstanding Th17 T cell subset in relation to the airways. These T cells are also of grave importance to HIV immunity. Th17 T cells secret a repertoire of cytokines, IL-17 being the archetype. The project focuses on the cross reactivity of Th17 cytokines and their resulting responses to pathogens/environmental substances. This has led to lung disorders like severe asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or acute respiratory distress syndrome like bronchiolitis obliterans, chronic lung allograft rejection and cystic fibrosis.

Past Experience

  • Post Doctoral Research Fellow
    September 2011 --- October 2012
I worked with the Immune modulatory effects of HIV-1 on Dendritic and T cells for over five years. This work was defended publicly on the 2nd of September 2011. The focus was on HIV-1 pathogenesis and possible findings that could facilitate or hasten the generation of effective HIV-1 vaccines.
