I am a professional in analytical chemistry and I am currently finalizing my PhD entiteled “Illegal cosmetics on the Belgian market”. I dare to say that I am a creative researcher that likes to work with people to solve challenging problems related to analytical chemistry or toxicology. Aside from the technical work I am also passionate about the managerial and business aspects of a corporation.

Current Experience

  • Doctoral Researcher
    Since September 2011
The project consists of an analytical and a biopharmaceutical part. As a first step, in the analytical part a screening technique for the most relevant bleaching agents will be developed based on up-to-date analytical methods. Samples taken by inspectors at (illegal) import and selling places in Belgium will be analysed to identify both the actives that are illegally present and the most commonly used galenic formulations (lotions, creams, soaps,…). In a second step, quantitative and sensitive analytical analysis methods will be developed for the major actives and the most common formulations identified in the illegal market survey. This analytical part is fitting into a general initiative of the EDQM (European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Health Care) to modernize the analysis of cosmetics and their ingredients. In the biopharmaceutical-oriented part of the project, the systemic (bio)availability of the topically applied major bleaching agents will be investigated by studying their dermal absorption using in vitro technology. Several parameters, potentially affecting the results will be evaluated including: the presence of penetration enhancers, emulsion type and differences in galenic compounded formulations, combination of actives, pH, etc., and human skin samples according to OECD guideline 428 and SCCS/1358/10.
