Experiences

Current Experience

  • Project director
    Since January 2011
I lead and manage a small group of graduate students and research assistants, from project- and experimental design and execution to day-to-day training. My research aims to define mechanisms of response and resistance to novel therapeutics in breast cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma, with a special emphasis on epigenetic drugs and drugs targeting mRNA translation. I maintain a translational component to each project and provide scientific input for the design of Phase I/II and proof-of-principal clinical trials. Responsible for research proposals, grant submissions, protocols for research ethics review (human and animal), follow-up reports for funding agencies, collaborators, etc.

Past Experience

  • Postdoctoral Research Associate
    March 2007 --- December 2011
Studied mechanisms of response and resistance to novel therapeutics in leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer. Supervised and mentored several undergraduate and graduate students as well as research assistants. Secured funding for all projects.

  • Post-doctoral fellow
    October 2000 --- March 2007
Using breast cancer cells as model systems, I studied cross-talk of nuclear receptors (such as the estrogen receptor, retinoic acid receptors and the steroid and xenobiotic receptor) with each other and with cellular signal transduction pathways.

  • PhD student
    April 1997 --- September 2000
My thesis project was to examine anti-tumour effects of analogs of vitamin A and D on pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells and to elucidate their mechanisms of action.
