Summary

graduated from the ku leuven in july 2013 as a master of science with a major in biology, specifically molecular biology and Plant Physiology. i continued my research at the Lab of molecular Plant biology of the ku leuven as a PhD student investigating sweet immunity in model plants and important crops. failing to obtain an iwt scholarship, despite obtaining a strong personal score, i came across an exceptional job opportunity. this is how, in january 2014, i started working as Research Assistant for sesvanderhave in tienen, the only company in the world focusing exclusively on sugar beet seeds. i was responsible for the scientific set-up, Planning and execution as well as the Analysis and interpretation of experiments, screening the company's germplasm for a whole number of plant traits and abiotic stress factors, thus providing the breeders with specific information for further improving the different sugar beet varieties. as from january 2015, entitled Project Manager abiotic stress, i am now responsible for the management of projects delivering new technology and data generation on the process of determining differences in plants reactions to abiotic stress, with the objective to register new varieties and create commercial products with a specified set of trait characteristics, according to business requirements. still eager to learn, i try to get involved in all aspects of the breeding process as well as the stress resistance research, always looking for new challenges and to further improve myself within the company. as such, i was strongly involved in advising on the technical specifications and light sources for the new R&D facilities of the sesvanderhave Innovation center, to be finished in the summer of 2016.

title: sweet immunity in model plants and important crops. abstract: recent data suggest that a universal sucrose and oligosaccharide mediated signaling pathway exists in all plants that contributes to multi-stress tolerance in plants and perhaps in all eukaryotes. this sweet immunity concept will be checked by biochemical and molecular work on tobacco and arabidopsis as model plants. future application prospectives will be verified on strawberry and tomato as important crops in flanders. tasks: - grow tobacco plants under stabile conditions. - plan, execute, process and report on scientific Research experiments. - quantification of sugars (HPLC), enzymatic activities (ELISA) and Gene expression (rt-qPCR). - function within a team, discussing results and experimental setups. - write and defend project papers and Applications in front of a panel of experts. - assist bachelor and master students in their Research projects. - present topics to large groups of students.
