Current Experience

  • Project advisor
    Since March 2016

    Full-time position as project adviser within the European Commission's executive agency EASME. Main role involves the overseing and management of EU marine and maritime projects on behalf of DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Project differ depending on political priorities but remain linked to the sustainable development of the EU marine and maritime economies in line with EU policies such as Integrated Maritime Policy, Common Fisheries Policy and the Maritime Strategic Framework Directive.

    Current projects focus on maritime spatial planning assisting Member States in implementing the eponymous EU directive and improving cross-border cooperation between States. I am also managing projects implemeting EMODnet - The European Marine Observation Data Network, which aims at establishing an EU-wide marine database and network by integrating, harmonizing data sources and improving data ingestion and collection.

Past Experience

  • DG MARE - Desk Officer
    September 2015 --- December 2015
    My core work focused on monitoring and implementation of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). It involved: Working in close cooperation with Member States on adoption and implementation of EMFF Operational Programmes in line with priorities under the Common Fisheries Policy. Contributing to briefings and other policy work related to Operational Programmes and Structural actions, and; Working on projects (procurement and grants, calls for tenders/proposals) to meet our policy objectives to strengthen data collection for fisheries advice.

  • EC Executive agency EASME - Maritime affairs unit - Project Advisor
    February 2015 --- July 2015
    In charge of the drafting, launch and follow up of the implementation of two projects on european integrated maritime policy at EASME - The executive agency for small and medium-sized enterprises. In terms of work, it involved liaising with our parent DG MARE, discussing project content and form, drafting of the calls for proposals and tenders, verifying legal and procedurial aspects. In addition, as an assistant project advisor, I assisted the team with any ad-hoc tasks needed for their actions: drafting of tenders, attending meetings and drafting minutes, second opinion from a scientific perspective etc.

  • DG MARE C1 - Integrated Maritime Policy - Policy officer
    October 2014 --- December 2014
    Obtained a broad understanding of EU policies and initiatives with a focus on maritime policy and affairs, especially related to Blue Growth, Integrated Maritime Policy, Maritime Spatial Planning and the Marine Strategic Framework Directive. Worked on policy and legal aspects dealing aiming at promoting the sustainable growth of the EU maritime sector including: Marine Biotechnology, Deep Sea Mining and Algal Biofuels.

  • DG MARE C3 Data Collection - Blue Book Trainee
    March 2014 --- July 2014
    Obtained a broad understanding of business in the fisheries sector, from legal to technical matters: CFP, MSFD, MSS, IMP etc. Became acquainted with EC specific administrative tools and procedures. Worked on EU member state compliance regarding EU legislation on data collection (Data Collection Framework) for fisheries and evaluating Member State annual reports on their annual data collection programme.

  • Operations Support
    August 2011 --- August 2012
    Worked on aftercare data management and auditing for our solar panel installations carried out by our different contractors, bridging communication and solving problems between installation contractors and data management sub-contractor. Helped resolve legal issues and obtaining relevant building permission from mortgage companies and other parties with a charge on customer property. Issued and managed all documentation including customer leases, company registration documents, and agreement contracts, making sure all is correct and accounted for. Was in charge of all office management including finding and setting up a new office, installing all IT, managing supplies, and all general housekeeping. In addition, assisted directors as PA when necessary. Obtained a broad understanding of business in the sustainable sector, from legal to technical matters

  • Belgian Focal Point for the Convention on Biodiversity - Student Job
    March 2009 --- August 2009
    Note: over several short months to a total of 6 months experience, both as volunteer and paid student job. Participated in the COP10 for the Convention on Biological Diversity alongside the Belgian delegation in Nagoya, Japan and other outreach and communication and biodiversity projects.
