Artemisia annua L. or Sweet Wormwood (Family Asteraceae) produces artemisinin. This compound is used as a therapeutic against Plasmodium parasites that are causing malaria. Because the plant makes only a small amount of artemisinin and because it is economically not possible to chemically synthesise artemisinin, the aim is to indentify genes that are involved in the biosynthesis of artemisinin. This can open the opportunity to synthesise artemisinin in yeast for a reasonable price.
