    • Optimization of in vitro and ex vivo psoriasis models
    • Testing (topically or systemic) of novel therapeutics (siRNAs, small molecules) against psoriasis in ex vivo 3D reconstructed skin models
    • Involved in the identification of potential biomarkers to predict therapeutic response to biologicals in psoriasis patients
    • Involved in the establishment of a Biobank for immunologic skin disorders (in collaboration with Bimetra, UZ Ghent and implementation of SLIMS software)
    • Supervisor of lab technicians and PhD students (co-promotor)
    • Practical guidance of PhD students appointed on an IWT-TGO project in collaboration with Galapagos N.V., Mechelen and Galapagos, SASU (Romainville, France) (Oct 2013-Dec 2016), and research meetings (2x/year)

Past Experience

    October 2005 --- September 2011

    • Introduction and application of RNA interference (transient or stable) to silence specific isoforms of the motor protein myosin Va in order to inhibit melanosome transport in human primary melanocytes. This work resulted in patent application PCT Pub. No. WO2007/068704 A1, published on the 21st of June, 2007
    • Start-up of miRNA profiling of melanocytes followed by validation (qPCR, western blots, immunohistochemistry) and functional assays (transfections, luciferase assays) to identify target genes of aberrant miRNAs
    • Involved in the development of ultradeformable liposomes to deliver siRNA to the skin topically
    • Establishment of a 3D ex vivo reconstructed skin model (for use in depigmentation studies, topical application of molecules…)
    • Involved in the identification of genes or pathways playing a role in immune resistance in melanoma (FFPE material or blood samples)
    • Supervisor of PhD students and lab coordination (incl. biosafety)
    • Attending workshops and international meetings (+ presentation of own research work)
    • This work has led to 17 peer-reviewed papers of which 4 as first and one as last author
