Experiences

Past Experience

  • Post doctoral scientist
    January 2015 --- December 2015

I was responsible of the in vitro part of a research project funded by the Academy of Finland. The project was aiming to discover the effects of nanomaterials on the respiratory system by integrative genomic approach. I was looking for ways to utilize in vitro high throughput screening in nanomaterial risk assessment.

    My duties included:

    ▪ Planning and carrying out the in vitro experiments

    ▪ Analysis and presentation of the results

    ▪ Supervision of junior researchers and technical staff

    Main achievements:

    • Samples delivered on time

    • Introduction of a new research platform to asses toxicity of nanomaterials (semi-high throughput)

    • Setting up a new semi-high throughput workflow to extract DNA/RNA/miRNA

Project leader: Dario Greco, PhD, Adjunct Professor, Academy of Finland research fellow

  • researcher
    September 2014 --- December 2014

I worked as a project researcher in Sisu project funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund. The goal of the project was to uncover novel biomarkers of moisture damage by utilizing methods of systems biology.

    My duties included:

    ▪ Analysis of microarray results

    ▪ Collecting samples from PBMC cells

    ▪ Measuring RNA purity by Bioanalyzer

    ▪ cDNA synthesis and subsequent rtPCR analysis of mRNA expression

  • Graduate Student / Researcher
    January 2008 --- August 2014

Investigating the safety of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) by proteomic techniques.

    Ph.D. project covered:

    ▪ ENM-protein interaction studies

    ▪ Analysis of intracellular proteome changes after ENM exposure

    ▪ Analysis of secretome changes after ENM exposure

    Main achievements:

    • Four publications

    • PhD

    • Successful grant application

    • Arranged several recreational days for the lab-people

    • Extraction of a protein mixture from the hair and dander of cows, which can be used to detect bovine allergy in skin Prick tests.

Group Leader (Unit of Systems Toxicology): Research Professor Harri Alenius Director (Nanosafety Research Centre): Research Professor Kai Savolainen Ph.D. Project Supervisor: Ph.D., Doc. Anne Puustinen

  • Undergraduate Student
    March 2007 --- October 2007

Performing the experiments for my Master's thesis: Quantitative dissociation and characterization of the virion structure of a halophilic archaeal virus HMV1

    Main achievements:

    • Gained skills in bacterial culture, virus culture and purification, as well as ultra centrifugation

    • My work was used as the basis for a publication

Group leader: Academy Professor Dennis Bamford

  • Undergraduate Student
    June 2006 --- August 2006

Practical training, learning the basic methods in molecular and cell biology.

    Main achievements:

    • Obtained skills in PCR, plasmid purification, molecular cloning, cell culture, genotyping, northern blotting and other basic molecular biology methods

    • Mainly caused infections to cell lines, though. (Still don't think it was my fault)

Group Leader: M.D., Ph.D., Academy Professor Kari Alitalo
