The Central Andean Highlands are the center of origin of the potato with more than 3800 different varieties. Soil microbes are key-components of any agricultural system and exert many different functions from detrimental (as pathogens) to beneficial (e.g. plant growth promoters and pathogen antagonists). The aim of this research is to improve our knowledge of the interactions between plants and microbes, and of sustained management of these microbes to benefit plant growth and protection. This knowledge could help to reduce excessive use of agrochemicals, alleviating hazardous effects of agricultural production on the environment. One approach is the inoculation of the potato plant with appropriate beneficial microbes (e.g. arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), pathogen antagonists) aiming for sustainable intensification of potato-based farming systems in the Andean area. Attention was devoted to rhizosphere and endophytic microbes. This PhD research was part of the VALORAM-project (Valorizing Andean Microbial diversity through sustainable intensification of potato-based farming systems). The project is the result of the collaboration between UCL and UGent (Belgium), AIT (Austria), UCC (Ireland), LMU (Germany), CIP (Peru), PROINPA (Bolivia) and UTPL (Ecuador).
