The PhD project I’m working on, aims to explore the possibilities and difficulties of the implementation of key elements of effective community-based care methods in the treatment of persons with intellectual disorders or an acquired brain injury with additional behavioural and/or mental disorders.
Background: As described in the policy paper "Perspectief 2020", Flemish Minister of Welfare, Public Health and Family, Jo Vandeurzen, claims that priority should be given to persons with intellectual problems or an acquired brain injury with additional behavioural and/or mental disorders, among others, in the expansion and further development of care. This population, with many and complex needs, has increased in residential settings in the past years. It seems it is generally accepted that any such care is difficult to provide in community-based shelters or in the persons’ families. On the other hand, professionals experience that traditional approaches of community- and home-based care are not appropriate to the specific needs of this target population.
At first, effective community-based care techniques will be listed. Afterwards these techniques will be analysed on generic components, which will finally be tested in the target population.
