the reasons that made me pursue the academic path towards becoming a phd were of different nature. my phd project has given me an opportunity to tackle a neglected disease, which represents a challenge, by using innovative tools for diagnosis (the ‘nanobodies®’). it has also allowed me to interact and collaborate with people who actually suffer the consequences of such a disease in their daily life. finally, it offered me the possibility of moving to another country and thus encountering a new culture and language. the main two goals of my Research are: 1) develop a nanobody®-based Diagnostic tool for animal trypanosomiasis that can supersede the current methods which lack the desired sensitivity (enclosed within the frame of a european project called nanotryp) 2) gain insight into the poorly understood immunopathology of trypanosomiasis caused by trypanosoma vivax.
