M.D,. Ph. D., Director, Pathology and Microbiology
Since November 2003
Coordination and management of both diagnostic and research activities in clinical immunology, allergy, oncology, virology and microbiology, conduction of screening programs, nosocomial microbiology surveillance, risk assessment, and conduction of drug and vaccine clinical trials. Main focus of research activities include studies on immunologic and haematologic diseases, aimed at exploring mechanisms of pathogenesis and/or response to therapy in autoimmune, allergic, myeloid and lymphatic disorders as well as studies aimed at elucidating mechanisms of either viral or microbial pathogenesis, factors governing the response to therapy and at the identification of mechanisms and/or correlates of immune protection/disease progression exploitable for the development of novel laboratory assays for clinical testing and/or vaccine or biological drugs development. These studies have also led to the development of a laboratory platform for laboratory monitoring of vaccine clinical trials. More recent activities include studies on microbial diseases aimed at developing and validating novel tests and protocols to characterize microbial biofilms, mechanisms of biofilm-related drug resistance and at testing drug resistance profiles of biofilm-forming bacteria. Senior Staff Physician
March 1998 --- November 2003
Clinical management and care, basic research and clinical studies in an academic-driven environment. Leading a laboratory for the development of clinical studies and basic research projects. Teacher for Medical Residents and Students. Projects planning, including specific activities and resources, team supervision and monitoring of project development. Assessment of performance and training needs, team motivation and coaching. Main research topics included immunologic and hematologic disorders, autoimmune diseases, innate and acquired immune deficiencies with a special focus on HIV/AIDS immune pathogenesis, neuroimmune disorders as well as mechanisms of HAART-induced immune reconstitution. A relevant effort has been devoted to studies aimed at identifying mechanisms and/or correlates of immune protection exploitable as laboratory biomarkers either for monitoring of HIV infection or for HIV/AIDS vaccine development.
Senior Research Fellow
January 1990 --- January 1995
Leading a laboratory unit for the development of clinical studies and basic research projects focused on HIV/AIDS immune pathogenesis, with a particular focus on neuroimmune disorders. Teacher for Students. Projects planning, including specific activities and resources, team supervision and monitoring of project development. Assessment of performance and training needs, team motivation and coaching.
