Past Experience

  • Research Trainee Anderlecht, Belgium
    February 2015 --- May 2015

IRMW is a fundamental research centre sponsored by Cocof. Its projects are focused on microorganisms and their biomolecules.  The research team “Structure/Function Relationship of Proteins” (SFRP) studies the link between 3D structure of enzymes and their activity.

The RSFP team tries to understand why the cellulase RBcel1 (GH5) is able to make specific glycosidic bonds while its closest structural homologs can’t . The team products/purifies mutants of these enzymes and studies the impact of the mutation on both the 3 dimensional structure and the enzyme activity. These experiences would provide some clues to better understand the enzymatic mechanism.

I mainly had to work on the mutant RBcel1 R176Q : product/purify the protein, find crystallization conditions and compare the exoglucanase activity with the native enzyme. The first part (production, purification and crystallization) of my job was quite well defined with lab protocols and  former reports. However there was no strong method to define the exoglucanase activity. Thus I had to develop my own method.

    Results :

    - An excellent training in enzymology and in biochemical engineering

    - Improving skills in writing scientific reports and oral presentations

    - Both social inclusion and professional integration in a research institute

    - Obtaining clues from experiments and a brand new method of exoglucanase measure

  • Lab Technician QC (Student Job) Estaimpuis, Belgium
    August 2014 --- September 2014

Mc Bride company  products soaps, detergents, cleaning products household, ... The company need to ensure the quality of its products. Chemical tests must be made to guarantee the conformity.

As lab technician for quality control my mission was to check all raw materials. I realized physical/chemical  tests and verify the certificate of analysis (CoA)  in order to accept or reject products from Mc Bride suppliers. My secondary role was to save and sort samples. I also were disposed to answer demands from customers (concerning raw materials) and send samples as needed.

I took part in the quality control for chemical industry, I learnt and shared experience with others lab technicians and workers.

  • Trainee Rongy, Brunehaut, Belgium
    September 2012 --- October 2012

“Brasserie Brunehaut” is a typical Belgian brewery located in Rongy. This is a very small company (only 5 employees) but its name is well-known in the region and its products are more and more exported.

As part of the engineering studies, the student  has to stay 6 weeks in an industry and help an engineer. The student has to take part in the daily activities in the aim to understand the functioning of the society and to define the role of an engineer.

I joined the team and I helped them to product their beers from the malt to the bottling. It was my first relevant experience in the industry. I learned a lot about the beer production and gave birth to a tasty  point of interest.
