I enjoy working on complex problems for human health and flourishing both within and outside science, with a focus on cognitive skills, psychological well-being, and contributing socio-cultural factors. My toolbox includes quantitative skills in statistical analysis and modeling from cognitive neuroscience and computational linguistics, strong communication skills and out-of-the-box thinking as a published creative writer and ambitious student in social sciences, literature, and philosophy, as well as leadership experience as a project coordinator for large-scale scientific studies. In August, I will graduate with a master's from the University of Amsterdam, where the psychology department (home department for my lab work) is ranked #10 by QS World University Rankings 2016. After graduating, I aim to make a positive impact on the world by learning, training, and applying methods to improve health and cognitive-psychological outcomes, whether that is in the research lab, clinic, or industry.

Current Experience

  • Full-time Research Intern Amsterdam, Netherlands
    Since February 2016

    Principal Investigator: Dr. Heleen Slagter

    • Run experiments and write scripts in R and MATLAB to analyze electroencephalogram (EEG) and behavioral data investigating the effects of electrical brain stimulation on both attention and processing of target information

    • Write R scripts for creating data figures visualizing results from correlations, multiple regressions, repeated measures analysis of variance, and t-tests

Past Experience

  • Full-time Research Intern Amsterdam, Netherlands
    February 2015 --- August 2015

Principal Investigator: Dr. Simon van Gaal

    • Wrote MATLAB scripts analyzing experimental behavioral data to explore how subliminal feedback versus conscious feedback can influence decisions differently (found small but long-lasting effect of subliminal feedback on decisions, and that better strategic control over decisions requires up-weighting conscious feedback over time)

    • Wrote R scripts for creating data figures visualizing results from correlations, multiple regressions, and t-tests

  • Associate Research Specialist Madison, WI, United States
    August 2012 --- June 2014

Co-Principal Investigators: Prof. Dr. Richard Davidson & Dr. Lisa Flook

    • Project coordinator for randomized controlled study on a mindfulness curriculum and its effects on children’s attention, cognitive control, intelligence, school grades, pro-sociality, and health

    • Hired, trained, and managed a team of 25 research assistants to administer battery of behavioral computer tests to four- and five-year-olds in over 500 experimental test sessions at several schools

    • Coordinated communications between research staff, ethical review board, teachers, and school district administrators

    • Miscellaneous duties included: budgeting and tracking expenses, submitting experimental protocol changes and renewals to ethical review board

  • Laboratory Manager Chicago, IL, United States
    November 2010 --- November 2011

    Principal Investigator: Dr. Patrick Wong

    • Hired, trained, and managed team of 9 research assistants for processing brain imaging data, collecting behavioral data, and entering data for studies in neurophysiology of language and music processing

    • Programmed data collection scripts for project assessing language skills in children

    • Proofread, formatted, and submitted manuscripts to international peer-reviewed scientific journals

    • Drafted and proofread grant proposals and progress reports submitted to government funding agencies

    • Miscellaneous duties included: webmaster for public and intranet webpages, managing large datasets and participant databases, maintenance and purchase of lab equipment, coordinating participant recruitment, submitting protocol changes and renewals to ethical review board

  • Writing Tutor DeKalb, IL, United States
