After obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at Ghent University in Belgium, Barbara joined the spin-off Biogazelle. Over time she was responsible for several aspects in this fast growing start-up; ranging from operational management, to product development, marketing and sales.
Barbara has proven to be strong communicator and solid project manager. She is fascinated about (digital) innovations in healthcare and biotechnology. She has been working at the consulting company Leyton, advising clients about fiscal incentives to finance innovations.
In 2015, she started her own company Akcelis to accelerate patient recruitment for clinical trials. Akcelis offers innovative patient recruitment strategies and consultancy.

"The study of long-range genetic defects in human transcription factor related disorders" Promotor: Prof. Dr. Anne De Paepe Co-Promotor: Prof. Dr. Elfride De Baere Key responsibilities and activities: • Study design, laboratory work, data management, and publication writing in the context of the PhD thesis • Design, validation and implementation of a genetic diagnostic test in an accredited laboratory Backgroud of the project: Long-range genetic control is an inherent feature of genes harbouring a highly complex spatiotemporal expression pattern, requiring a combined action of multiple cis-regulatory elements such as the promoter, enhancers and silencers. Consequently, disruption of the long-range genetic control of a target gene by genomic rearrangements involving regulatory elements, may lead to aberrant gene transcription and disease. The main objective of this thesis was to assess the prevalence of long-range genetic defects in human genetic disease through the study of four transcription-factor related disorders. In addition, we aimed to identify and study the function of cis-regulatory elements of the corresponding disease genes.
