Past Experience

  • Research Assistant Diepenbeek, Belgium
    November 2015 --- July 2016

I was part of a research group investigating ways to better filter out contaminating agents (pesticides in particular) in surface water. To achieve this goal, we synthesized multiple Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs; think of them as artificial enzymes with target molecules being imprinted in them), each with varying compositions. Their binding capacity and -affinity were evaluated using UV-VIS spectrometry. During this internship, we also synthesized our own building blocks for these MIPs and cross-evaluated their performances with the conventional systems.

  • Research Assistant Diepenbeek, Belgium
    March 2015 --- April 2015

Synthesis of star block copolymers with the goal of achieving a unimolecular micelle. Research was mainly focused on bulk polymerization under UV-light stimulus. Succes was evaluated through H-NMR and GPC data. Experience in working methodically and cleanly in the lab, as well as properly using synthetic lab equipment such as rotavaps, vaccuum pumps and ovens, ... were also included in this training.

  • Research Assistant Diepenbeek, Belgium
    February 2015 --- March 2015

Assistant in the research for 3D-hydrogel based cell cultures for lung cells. The goal of this research was to develop a viable 3D cell culture that actually mimics in vivo circumstances, as opposed to 2D cell cultures. Analysis of the created samples was performed with Fluorescence Confocal Microscopy and cell stainings. Furthermore I gained experience in working under flow chambers and working with incubation ovens. Working under sterile conditions was also part of my training.
