Prof dr. Linos Vandekerckhove (°1973) is a staff member of the Department of General Internal Medicine in the Gent University Hospital. He combined his infectious disease specialist education program with a PhD in the laboratory for Molecular Virology of Prof Z. Debyser (Catholic University Leuven). With this combination he bridges the gap between Clinical Infectious Diseases at the AIDS clinic and basic Molecular Virology research. Since 2010 Dr. Vandekerckhove works as an assistant professor in Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Gent University, Belgium and as a visiting Professor at the Gladstone Institute, University of California, San Francisco, US. His research is focusing on the implementation strategies of new diagnostics (like massive parallel sequencing) and on the quantification of HIV reservoirs. Within the Department of Internal Medicine he personally directs the research projects on HIV translational research. His clinical research unit consists of two GCP trained study nurses and one data manager to coordinate,  to guide inclusion and patient  follow up of many phase 3 clinical trials (currently N= 6) and investigator initiated trials (N=3). His research group (>10 FTE dedicated researchers) pioneered in Europe the development of quantitative PCR based assays using the very recently developed digital droplet platform. Since, our group has published key papers comparing different assay’s in highly relevant patient cohorts (see below).  In addition the group is training new scientist to use this assays during their annually HIV reservoir quantification course.
